Playlist – Arizona
Verbose as we are, there is no way we can spend the next year constantly
yelling talking to each other. Terrible as it may sound to the ears of an outsider, singing as loudly as possible is a frequent occurrence in The Highland Flinger (THF). We will make a playlist of what we’re slappin the air bass to. Each list will contain songs from artists/bands from the state or will allude to the state in some way.
1. Michelle Branch – Everywhere
Best. day. ever. Michelle Branch is from Arizona. This is a great jam, particularly sweetened when accompanied by Dawson’s Creek reruns. Where is she now you ask? Great news–did you know she just released a new single? We didn’t either until we googled her…
2. Dierks Bentley – What Was I Thinkin’
I was thinking bout a little white tank top, but then decided no clothing is more logical…because Arizona was 107 degrees every day we were there.
3. Stevie Nicks – Landslide
Great version from Jackie’s favorite singing show:
4. Jordin Sparks – No Air
“Tell me how I’m s’posed to breathe with no air?” says Jackie during her triathlon.
5. Alice Cooper – School’s Out
Do you think he finished this song and went, “This song will be played every June from now until eternity”? Probably not, but this song is the unofficial start of summer anthem.
6. Gin Blossoms – Hey Jealousy
“Do you think it’d be alright, if I can just crash here tonight?” We might be saying that a few times throughout the next year…
7. Eagles – Take It Easy
Officially put Winslow, AZ on the map. A missed exit had us heading that way for a couple of miles before we figured ourselves out. Too bad, we could’ve finally seen that girl in that flat-bed Ford.
8. Meat Puppets – Backwater
How many band names do you think they went through before finally settling on “Meat Puppets”?
10. Public Enemy – By The Time I Get To Arizona
Public Enemy was real mad that Arizona didn’t want to recognize MLK Day. Yay for 3 day weekends!
11. Stevie Nicks (with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) – Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around
Nicks hails from Phoenix, and killed it on her first solo album with the help of this song.
12. Clutch – King Of Arizona
Is John McCain the unofficial King of Arizona?
13. Bobby Troup – Route 66
“Get your kicks, on Route 66.” A classic.
14. Alice Cooper – No More Mr. Nice Guy
Finally had to take the advice of Mr. Cooper after dealing with Arizona drivers (the worst we’ve experienced).
15. Everclear – Your Arizona Room
You have no idea how many times we dreamed of an (air-conditioned) Arizona room while sweating through 97 degree nights in The Highland Flinger.
