Playlist – Delaware

Verbose as we are, there is no way we can spend the next year constantly yelling talking to each other. Terrible as it may sound to the ears of an outsider, singing as loudly as possible is a frequent occurrence in The Highland Flinger (THF). We will make a playlist of what we’re slappin’ the air bass to. Each list will contain songs from artists/bands from the state or will allude to the state in some way.

DELAWARE

1. Stephen Marley – Hey Baby
For a short period of time Rita and Bob Marley lived in Wilmington, DE and that’s where Stephen Marley was born. Stephen Marley is an accomplished musician in his own rite as a singer and producer, and has won five Grammys with Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers.

2.Rocket Scientists – Pythagoras Unbound
Band member Don Schiff hails from Wilmington, Delaware and plays more instruments than Delaware has counties. He is credited with playing the Bassguitarist, Chapman Stick, NS/Stick, and bowed guitar player.

3. The Crash Motive – Not Giving Up
The Crash Motive met at the University of Delaware in 2003. Ironically, they did give up in 2008 after lead singer, Derek Fuhrmann left the band. Womp womp.

4. The Caulfields- Devil’s Diary
Another Delaware band that met it’s demise, The Caulfields “fell victim to record label politics” (rockandrollreport.com).

5. Plow United – Spindle
Speaking of things political, Plow United had to change their name from just “Plow” after a band of the same name claimed they had rights to the name. I’m pretty sure that ancient Mesopotamians actually have rights to it, given they invented plows.

6. Smashing Orange – Whenever
Smashing Orange is also no longer together, but given the size of Delaware, there are slim musical pickings! Delaware with it’s 2,490 square miles (including water area) is roughly 1/2 the size of Los Angeles county. (LA county is 4,752 square miles, not including it’s water area).

7. The Spinto Band – Oh Mandy
While trying to learn more about The Spinto Band, I stumbled across one of their earliest blog posts that contains rules for listening to music in their vehicle. They read:

1. Driver has final say
2. Passengers may make suggestions
3. If driver doesn’t play the suggestion within 3 minutes it is considered a pocket veto
4. Randomizers will be chosen by the passenger flipping blindly through a CD wallet until the driver says the word “STOP!” (http://www.spintonic.net/splash/)

Do you have any music car rules?

8. George Thurgood And The Destroyers – Bad To The Bone
Another Wilmington descendant, with a true talent for quickly pronouncing letter sounds. After all these years, I still can’t perfect the “b-b-b-b-b” part.

9. Chuck Wicks – All I Ever Wanted
Chuck Wicks grew up on a farm in Smyrna, DE. The abundance of farm land in Delaware surprised us, given it’s small size. We’ve learned a lot about the landscape of Delaware while avoiding road tolls and taking the scenic routes.

10. City and Colour – Hello, I’m In Delaware
Hey, us too! We should totally meet up.

11. Little Girls – Delaware
Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution, making it technically the first state. A fact all little girls (and boys) who attended middle school should know!

12. University of Delaware Deltones – Listen To Your Heart
Featured on NBC’s The Sing Off, The Deltones are an on campus acapella group. If you liked them, you can check them out on Facebook.

13. Watermark – Welcome to Delaware
When you drive into Delaware, you could enter from Maryland, however, you could also enter from Pennsylvania, in which case you would be entering the Twelve-Mile Circle. The Twelve-Mile Circle refers to the arc shape at the top of Delaware, because it is a semi-circle in shape. It is the only state border to have such a shape!

14. The Bangles – Dover Beach
Though Delaware is small in size, it has 26 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline, 25 miles of Delaware Bay coastline, and 115 miles of inland bay coastline (nrdc.org). Lots of beaching opportunities!

15. The Avett Brothers – If It’s The Beaches
The Avett Brothers are actually from North Carolina, however, we did not include them on that playlist as an oversight. We figured however, that since our friend Katie (who lives in Delaware near a beach), loves The Avett Brothers, AND let us sleep in her air conditioned apartment we would put this on in honor of her! Thanks Katie!!
