Playlist – Rhode Island
Verbose as we are, there is no way we can spend the next year constantly
yelling talking to each other. Terrible as it may sound to the ears of an outsider, singing as loudly as possible is a frequent occurrence in The Highland Flinger (THF). We will make a playlist of what we’re slappin’ the air bass to. Each list will contain songs from artists/bands from the state or will allude to the state in some way.
1. Draco and the Malfoys – Slytherin Pride
I was suspect that there may be a Harry Potter following in Rhode Island after seeing a roller derby referee with the name “Luna Skatesgood.” Then there’s this. However, with Emma Watson attending Brown, we think “Hermione and the Grangers” is more fitting for the state. GRYFFINDOR PRIDE!
2. Blu Cantrell – Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)
Tiffany Cobb, nicknamed Blu, is from Providence. After making this huge hit in the early 2000s, she hasn’t had one as big since. However, according to her Twitter, she’s in the studio making her comeback album.
3. DJ Pauly D – Night of My Life (feat. Dash)
Like much of the Jersey Shore cast, DJ Pauly D is not from Jersey. He is from Providence, Rhode Island. He has won the Teen Choice Award for “Choice TV: Male Reality Star” two years in a row.
4. Jeffrey Osbourne – On The Wings Of Love
Jeffrey Osbourne sang that national anthem in 2008 before Game 4 of the NBA Finals, in 2009 before Game 1 of the NBA Finals, and again at Game 1 of the 2010 NBA Finals. All of these performances took place at the Staples Center. Go Lakers. Go Osbourne.
5. Ike and Tina Turner – Sweet Rhode Island Red
In the song, Tina sings about being called “Sweet Rhode Island Red.” Rhode Island Red is a breed of chicken. I’m certain that there is a MUCH better analogy.
6. John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band – On The Dark Side
Originially this Narragansett, RI band just went simply by “Beaver Brown.” Less is more, don’t you think?
7. Billy Gilman – One Voice
Billy Gilman is now 24, but he recorded this song when he was 12. These lyrics are pretty heavy, but enjoyed, we’re certain by serious country fans.
8. Roomful of Blues – Turn It On! Turn It Up!
I’ve noticed the need to turn it up lately and we both have grown many more gray hairs in the last year…
9. Someday Providence – Summertime in Rhode Island
Summertime in Rhode Island was hot, muggy, and miserable, definitely not “the only place we want to be for the summer.”
10. Deer Tick – Twenty Miles
One of us has been neurotic about getting ticks during our walks through heavy wooded areas. We’ll let you guess who.
12. The Low Anthem – Charlie Darwin
Did you know there is a Darwin Day? The website for the occasion encourages people to create their own events to “toast to the common good of all humanity.” Check it out!
13. Angry Salad – Stretch Armstrong
Angry Salad was on the label, Blackbird, which unfortunately closed. Even more terrible, Angry Salad had no label to release their recordings on and lost the rights to their name, music, and albums. That seems really unfair.
14. Monty Are I – One In A Million
Terrible grammar, but a play on words. Monty “RI”…see what they did there?
15. ZOX – Little More Time
Last summer ZOX asked their fans to send them YouTube clips of themselves playing ZOX songs. They chose their favorite and asked the musician to come on stage and play along. Pretty awesome.
